Sang H. Han is a Korean-born contemporary landscape painter who has exhibited his work throughout the US, where he has now been based for many years. He specializes in highly detailed panoramic scenes of nature that simultaneously burst with life and sit in poetic, silent solitude. Primarily working within Luminism and Impressionism, Han seeks to envelop the viewer in tranquil emotion and provide an overall sense of steadiness.
When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I wanted to be an artist ever since I was a child. I lost my father at an early age and at the time, art was sort of a peaceful escape. I was particularly drawn to scenes of nature as it reminded me that beauty was all around us, even in times of despair.
Can you talk about your artistic influences and other artists you are most inspired by?
Claude Monet and other pioneers within Impressionism have always influenced my style as I grew to admire their use of colors and specifically their depiction of light. My personal style of painting has veered away from using short thick strokes of paint that are emblematic of Impressionist techniques. However, the beautiful and accurate portrayal of light is something that I continue to incorporate into my work.
Do you prefer to work alone or collaborate with others?
I usually prefer to work alone but I would be open to producing an artwork collaboratively if the opportunity arises. Painting is similar to a meditative process for me. It is deeply reflective and I appreciate the solitude.
Can you tell us about a project you’re currently working on?
I am currently working on a limited series of landscapes juxtaposed in an abstract way with urban/city settings. The intersection (and beauty) of technology and nature has been a theme that I’ve sought to explore for some time.
What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t an artist?
I would likely have chosen to be a photographer because I love to travel and I enjoy exploring new places. This feels like a cheat answer since photography is still within the realms of art; however, I feel that the expression and execution of photography are entirely different from traditional fine art. It is also something that I would love to get better in!

Yes absolutely. SINGULART is a terrific platform that represents such varied and impressive styles and talent.
There are many artists that I admire who have completely different styles and techniques from mine. It is very humbling to be in the company of such individuals.
What advice could you give to young artists starting out?
I would say to explore, be curious, and be patient.
I would also think about how the art makes them feel inside – is it one that evokes emotion even if it is seemingly different from what collectors might want?
Always focus on the former and not the latter.
